Do you know any novels (love stories) with "unhappy" endings?
"Gone With the Wind" has an unhappy ending, and, in fact, the entire 1000+ page novel is filled with tragedy and misery! Scarlett O'Hara spends nearly all of the story wallowing in her unrequited love for Ashley Wilkes who is married to his cousin Melanie. Scarlett is therefore a fool, since Rhett Butler is so much more dashing and intriguing and handsome; Scarlett underappreciates him until he leaves her in the end, and she never does have a relationship with Ashley. Plus, Scarlett's and Rhett's little girl, Bonnie Blue, is killed. Most of the male characters die in the Civil War, and most of the O'Haras also die. There is no happily ever after to be found in that book! It's a story of the Civil War told from the point of view of a Southern woman, and the South did lose the war! No happiness to be found!
