Is Oakland California safe?

It is not known to be the safest city, but it should be OK if you use your common sense and don't do anything stupid like go out all by yourself at 2 AM or something like that. There are taxis available in some places, but it would be a good idea to keep the phone number handy so you can call one. There are buses as well (AC Transit), and there are a few public libraries.
