How do I make the latch on my house's door close?

Previously, my front door has worked just fine, but the latch is staying retracted for just a moment too long, so when I slam the door closed, it bounces back open. If I pull/push it shut firmly, it will latch. I've tried applying WD-40 to the latch to lubricate it, but to no avail. Any other ideas?
