Is compost ruined if there's anything inorganic in it?

my office building recently implemented a composting program. however, many people continue to put inorganic waste (plastic bags, Styrofoam containers, yogurt cups, etc.) in the bins, despite signage telling them not to dispose of this waste this way. does this ruin the compost? or, more slyly, does this waste the waste?
