Why is ity rare amongst orthodox Jews?

Well part of the answer is probably in this sentence "This study took place in the context of a country that has only recently lightened decades-long repression of religion and of uality." I would also guess that similar studies done in the US around 70 to 150 years ago would have similar findings.
